Alfriend Building

Alfriend Chemistry Building, December 1967

The Alfriend Building, previously known as the Alfriend Chemistry Building, is located between Webb University Center and Mills Godwin Life Sciences Building (MGB) on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU). The building is named after John S. Alfriend, a member of President Lewis W. Webb, Jr.’s Advisory Board from 1947 to 1962 and president of the Old Dominion Educational Foundation. From 1967 to 2021, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry had their offices in Alfriend.

History

Construction on the building began in 1965 and was dedicated in 1967. Prior to 1967, the Department of Chemistry was housed in the old Science Building, now William B. Spong, Jr. Hall. In 2019, construction on the new Chemistry Building began and was completed in time for the start of the Fall 2021 semester. In October 2021, the building’s name was changed to the Alfriend Building.
