School of Data Science

The School of Data Science is one of the academic colleges and schools at Old Dominion University (ODU). The school is a partnership between ODU, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory (JLAB), and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The school includes more than 150 faculty from a variety of disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, education, business, and criminal justice. The school is housed in Monarch Hall, with additional research labs and facilities in Kaufman Hall, the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center, and the Virginia Beach Institute of Data Science.

History

Established by President Brian O. Hemphill and approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) in February 2023, the school provides students the opportunity to research and collaborate in some of Tidewater’s national laboratories, such as JLAB and LaRC. In September 2023, Dr. Frank Liu was selected as the inaugural director of the school. In November 2023, the Virginia Beach Institute of Data Science was dedicated on the tenth floor of the Armada Hoffler Tower at 222 Central Avenue.
